Park Maintenance (Summer 2026 Contract)

JOB DESCRIPTION

The City of Orillia is seeking Seasonal Park Maintenance staff to join our team in the Parks and Recreation Division of the Environment and Infrastructure Services Department. Reporting directly to the Supervisor of Parks, the Parks Maintenance Staff play a key role in ensuring that the City’s parks, green spaces, trails, and recreational amenities are clean, safe, and welcoming for residents and visitors.

DUTIES

  • Perform routine maintenance of park buildings, structures, playground apparatus, and surrounding grounds to ensure cleanliness, safety, and proper functioning.
  • Conduct daily litter control throughout assigned parks, trails, and public spaces.
  • Inspect Park amenities regularly and report any damage, hazards, or required repairs.
  • Prepare flower beds, including soil cultivation, planting, edging, and mulching to maintain high-quality horticultural displays.
  • Install and care for ornamental plantings, perennial beds, shrub beds, and hanging baskets.
  • Water and maintain horticultural areas, including scheduled weekend watering duties.
  • Mow and trim turf areas across the parks system using push mowers, ride-on mowers, and trimmers.
  • Safely operate a variety of parks maintenance equipment and tools.
  • Perform routine equipment checks and basic upkeep to ensure machinery is in good working order.
  • Report equipment concerns or malfunctions promptly to the supervisor.
  • Collect garbage and recycling from parks receptacles and designated areas throughout the parks system.
  • Attend and actively participate in all scheduled staff meetings and training sessions, ensuring readiness to fulfill the responsibilities of the role and contributing to team cohesion and professional development.
  • Understand, adhere to, and enforce Corporate Policies & Procedures, Confidentiality Guidelines, Emergency Procedures, and Health and Safety Standards for all participants and staff.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.


 QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must possess a valid Class ‘G’ Ontario Driver’s License with an acceptable Driver Abstract.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Strong attention to detail, reliability, and a willingness to learn.
  • Experience in landscaping, horticulture, groundskeeping, or equipment operation is considered an asset but not required.
  • A valid and acceptable Criminal Record Check must be provided prior to the employment commencement date, at the incumbent’s expense.
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR-C certification from an accredited organization is considered an asset, please see below for optional First-Aid registration.

This position is a seasonal contract position (May 1, 2026 to September 4, 2026) that includes evening and weekend shifts.
