Culture Assistant (Contract)

JOB DESCRIPTION

The City of Orillia is seeking a dedicated and creative individual to join our team as the Culture Assistant in the Recreation, Youth and Culture Services Division of the Corporate Services Department. Reporting directly to the Culture Coordinator, the Culture Assistant will be responsible for managing the summer band concert series and artisan markets. They will also provide support in the planning, coordination, and execution of a variety of cultural initiatives throughout the summer season.

 

DUTIES

  • Manage the Sunday Evening Band Concert Series and the newly introduced Friday Night Band Concert Series and Artisan Markets, including managing event setup, teardown, and on-site coordination to ensure smooth operations throughout the events.
  • Assist in the planning, coordination, and execution of cultural events, programs, and initiatives organized by the municipality.
  • Support the installation, maintenance, and deinstallation of public art exhibitions, ensuring that each display is set up, preserved, and properly taken down. Additionally, assist in drafting and issuing Calls to Artists for upcoming exhibitions, helping to engage local and regional talent and ensure the continued vibrancy of the city’s cultural landscape.
  • Support grant acquisition efforts by conducting comprehensive research to identify relevant funding opportunities from government bodies, private organizations, and foundations. Draft grant proposals and assist in the preparation of reports that align with the City’s cultural and artistic goals, fostering support for the continued growth of the arts in the community.
  • Provide ongoing administrative support for cultural projects, including the creation, organization, and management of a catalogue for the City’s public art collection. This involves compiling and updating records, managing digital files, and ensuring that the collection is properly documented for future reference.
  • Support social media efforts and assist in marketing the city's cultural initiatives.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of new cultural programs and initiatives that align with the municipality’s strategic objectives for arts and culture. Participate in brainstorming sessions, assist with the design of innovative programs, and collaborate with stakeholders to enhance the cultural vibrancy of the community.
  • Assist in fostering relationships with local artists, performers, cultural organizations, and community groups to encourage participation in cultural initiatives and promote a diverse and inclusive range of artistic expressions in the City’s cultural offerings.
  • Understand, adhere to, and enforce Corporate Policies & Procedures, and Health and Safety Standards.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Relevant degree or diploma in Cultural Management, Arts Administration, Event Planning, Economic Development, Tourism, Museum Studies or a related field is considered an asset.
  • Previous experience in cultural programming, event coordination, community development or museum operations is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, and execute events, including setup, teardown, and on-site coordination.
  • Proven ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to multitask and prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Excellent research and writing skills with a proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Excellent customer service orientation and ability to foster positive relationships with diverse groups.
  • Valid G driver’s license.
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR-C certification from an accredited organization is required. Please see below for the dates the above qualifications are being offered. Applicants are required to obtain this training prior to their start date.

This position is a seasonal contract position that requires evening and weekend shifts. Work hours are 40 hours per week, Thursday through Monday. The successful candidate will be required to obtain an acceptable Criminal Record Check at their own expense prior to the employment commencement date.
