The City of Orillia is currently seeking a highly motivated individual to fill the position of Fitness Coordinator.
The Fitness Coordinator is responsible for the supervision and continuous improvement of the fitness centre and drop-in recreation operations at the Orillia Recreation Centre. This role oversees staff, daily operations, and the delivery of engaging, inclusive programs for all ages and abilities. This position reports to the Manager, Orillia Recreation Centre.
Candidates must have a post-secondary Degree/Diploma in Physical Education/Kinesiology/Recreation or related field. Must posess current Fitness Instructor and Personal Trainer certifications from a recognized certifying body.
The City of Orillia offers a competitive salary, a comprehensive benefits package, and registration with the OMERS pension plan. The salary for this position is $62,355 to $72,946 based on a 35-hour work week.

Reporting directly to the Manager, Orillia Recreation Centre or designate, the Fitness Coordinator will play a key role in enhancing our community’s fitness offerings.

*Note: All activities are expected to be performed in a safe manner, in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its Regulations, along with Corporate Safety policies, procedures and programs. In addition, all necessary personal protective equipment must be used and maintained in good condition.

- This position manages escalated customer concerns related to fitness programming, equipment use, or facility access. Judgment is used to assess each situation, apply corporate policies appropriately, and resolve concerns while maintaining a positive customer experience.
- This position is responsible for determining appropriate staff coverage based on operational needs and availability. Judgment is used to adjust schedules, coordinate replacements, and ensure adequate supervision of the fitness centre and drop-in spaces.
- This position monitors program participation and identifies opportunities for growth or adjustment. Judgment is used to evaluate attendance trends, customer feedback, and resource availability to make informed recommendations on program changes.
- This position supports the enforcement of health and safety protocols and corporate policies. Judgment is used to interpret and apply guidelines fairly while ensuring a welcoming and respectful environment for all users.
2. Examples of situations or problems that are referred to the supervisor for direction or resolution.
- Facility-wide operational issues, such as equipment failures affecting multiple areas or broader health and safety concerns requiring coordination with other departments.
Minimum Qualifications
Experience
- Experience supervising large staff teams
Knowledge/Skills/Ability
- Exceptional customer service, organizational and oral and written communication skills.
- Problem-solving ability and flexibility to adapt to changing needs or unforeseen challenges.
Physical Demands
- This position requires regular standing and walking throughout the fitness centre and recreation facility, with occasional bending, reaching, and lifting of equipment or supplies up to 50 lbs. The role involves moderate physical activity when setting up spaces, inspecting equipment, or responding to incidents. Extended periods of desk work are also required for administrative tasks.
Position Requirements
- Valid Class ‘G’ Ontario Driver’s License and access to a reliable vehicle.
- Current Standard First Aid with CPR - C from an accredited organization.
- A current and acceptable Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check is required for this position at the incumbent’s expense, prior to the commencement date.
Preferred Qualifications
Education (degree/diploma/certifications - in addition to the above)
- CSEP is Considered an asset.
Experience (in addition to the above)
- Previous experience in a municipal recreation setting.
Knowledge/Skills/Ability (in addition to the above)
- Proficiency in ActiveNet or similar recreation management software is an asset.
