The City of Orillia is currently seeking a highly motivated individual to fill the position of Trades 1 Operator.

 

The City does not use artificial intelligence in the hiring process. All job applications are reviewed personally by the appropriate Department/Division.  This is an existing position that is currently vacant. 

 

Reporting to the Manager of Road Operations, this position operates heavy machinery, power equipment, and tools to maintain and enhance City infrastructure, including roads, sidewalks, storm systems, signage, and public property. Performs winter control operations, installs and repairs traffic and street signs, and carries out general maintenance within City limits. Ensures compliance with City policies, health and safety regulations, and provincial legislation. Completes required documentation and participates in shift work, on-call, and emergency response duties as required.

 

Candidates must possess minimum Grade 12 Secondary School Diploma or equivalent education, at least two years of heavy equipment operating experience, and a valid Ontario Class DZ driver’s licence. Training in roads and storm operations, health and safety, first aid/CPR, and familiarity with reporting technology are considered assets. The role demands strong teamwork, communication, and public relations skills, flexibility to work varied shifts and on-call hours, and the ability to obtain an acceptable Criminal Record Check prior to employment.

 

The City of Orillia offers a competitive wage and benefits package, and registration with the OMERS pension plan. This is a Unionized position. The wage range for this position is $27.62 per hour with progression after successful completion of a 90-day probationary period to $28.50 per hour based on a 40-hour work week.

  • Operate various heavy machinery, power equipment and tools to maintain and improve City infrastructure including roads, sidewalks, boulevards, designated parking lots, signs, ditches, storm sewers, tree inventory and related public property.
  • Conduct all requirements of winter control operations within the Roads and Storm division for the winter control designated season.
  • Repair and install all street and traffic signs, guide rail systems, etc. as directed
  • Perform general maintenance functions for the roads, sidewalks, boulevards and storm systems within City limits as directed.
  • Responsible for completing various logs, forms and other administrative information and documentation including but not limited to daily vehicle and equipment inspections/log sheets, hours of service logs, and time records.
  • Participate in shift work and on-call / standby rotation duties for roads and storm functions (30 minute response for on-call/standby duties) as required.
  • Immediately respond to requests to address urgent activities, as required.

Experience 

  • Minimum of two years’ experience with heavy equipment operation.

  • Safety training including WHMIS and Basic First-Aid and CPR.
  • Ability to work as a team player and must get along well with others including those of different cultural, gender and nationality.  This individual shall also demonstrate acceptable public relations skills in dealing with the public.
  • Ability to work as a team player with excellent communication skills.

Physical Demands

  • Physical demand requires field work in outside weather conditions and may be exposed to wet, cold and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals.
  • The work of the position requires considerable climbing on and off equipment, managing and operating heavy equipment, and lifting and pulling heavy objects.
  • Close attention is required in all heavy equipment operation to ensure safety of operation, co-workers and the general public.  There will be extended periods of concentration requiring mental-sensory coordination.
  • Available to work overtime and flexible hours as required to handle emergencies and poor weather conditions.
  • Confined space and fall arrest equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn as required in accordance with City policies and the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
     

Position Requirements

  • Possess a valid class ‘DZ’ Ontario driver’s licence with acceptable Drivers Abstract.
  • Required to be part of the on-call rotation and must respond within 30 minutes.
  • A current and acceptable Criminal Record Check is required prior to the employment commencement date, at the incumbent's expense.
