JOB DESCRIPTION

The City of Orillia is seeking dynamic Lifeguards/Instructors to join our team in the Parks and Recreation Division of the Environment and Infrastructure Services Department. Daytime Lifeguard/Instructor are responsible to plan, organize and implement a high-quality program that is stimulating and enjoyable for all participants by supervising and creating a safe, enjoyable environment for all users.

DUTIES

  • Maintain complete vigilance while on duty and be ready to respond to any emergency situation; ensure proper zone coverage and guard station positioning.
  • Plan, organize deliver, and promote high quality safe and stimulating programs for all levels of participants. 
  • Complete administrative duties in a timely manner. (e.g., worksheets, lesson plans, incident/accident reports, etc.). 
  • Maintain a safe and tidy program space ensuring equipment is set-up, clean and stored appropriately. 
  • Be ready for work and in uniform at the start of each scheduled shift; ensuring that all lifesaving and instructional equipment is set out, checked and then put away each day (report any equipment deficiencies to supervisor). 
  • Report all concerns, accidents, and incidents to immediate supervisors for follow-up and take appropriate action. 
  • Handle program feedback, participant questions and concerns in a professional manner while providing exceptional customer service and maintaining order and proper conduct within the facility. 
  • Maintain an understanding of department programs and services. 
  • Assist other instructors in their lessons while not teaching a class. 
  • Attendance at all pre- and in-season in-service/training is mandatory. 
  • Understand, adhere to, and enforce Corporate Policies & Procedures, Confidentiality Guidelines, Emergency Procedures and Health and Safety Standards for all participants and staff. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

 QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be a minimum of 15 (fifteen) years of age. 
  • Current Lifesaving National Lifeguard Pool Certification.
  • Current Lifesaving Society Swim instructors, Lifesaving Society Lifesaving Instructor.
  • Current Standard/Intermediate First Aid with CPR – C (dated within 3 years). 
  • High Five: Principles in Healthy Child Development an asset.
  • Must possess strong organizational, customer service and both written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
  • Previous leadership experience working with children is an asset.
  • A valid and acceptable Criminal Record Check wth Vulnerable Sector Check must be provided prior to employment commencement date, at the incumbent's expense.

 

Work hours vary up to 44 hours per week and include daytime, evening and weekend shifts, as well as some holidays. Compensation for this position is $18.83 per hour (2026 rates) to start. Following successful completion of a probationary period, the hourly rate will increase to $20.24 per hour.
