Community Garden Coordinator (Contract)

 JOB DESCRIPTION

The City of Orillia has an opening for the part-time position of Community Garden Coordinator in the Development Services and Engineering department for the contract period of approximately May to October.

 

DUTIES

  • Monitor the current level of effectiveness of Community Gardening on municipal owned lands (number of users, convenience, level of satisfaction and enjoyment), and coordinate the development of new Community Gardens if necessary.
  • Become acquainted with residents and groups presently utilizing the community gardens located on Municipal and privately-owned lands.
  • Develop workshops and/or information sessions regarding community gardening practices and the development of the Community Garden Program.
  • Encourage residents to get involved and monitor the level of interest in Orillia for the Community Garden Program.
  • Work with the Orillia Farmers’ Market Manager to promote local garden usage and educate residents as part of the Community Outreach Strategy.
  • Act as the main point of contact between the City and community gardeners.
  • Responsible for monitoring the overall safety of the gardens, including cleanliness and upkeep.
  • Work with the Manager of Parks Planning & Development to determine the necessary garden improvements to be made for the season (i.e. signage, pathways, storage, new garden plots).
  • Conduct requested tours for horticulture groups, school field trips, or youth summer camps etc.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Grade 12 Diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience with community gardens or similar initiatives is required.
  • Experience working with and/or coordinating volunteers is required.
  • Experience working in a vegetable or production garden is an asset.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and judgment skills with the ability to work in a team environment.
  • Excellent computer skills using MS Office applications including Outlook, Excel, and Word.
  • Current First Aid and CPR training an asset.
  • Possess a valid class ‘G’ Ontario Drivers’ license with a reliable vehicle.
  • A current and acceptable Criminal Record Check is required for this position at the incumbent’s expense, prior to the commencement date.
  • A flexible work schedule, with weekend and evening work required.

 

Compensation for this position is $17.72 to $18.25 per hour. Hours of work will vary and will include evenings and weekends for approximately 20 hours per week. Interested candidates are invited to apply by March 31st, 2025.
