Animal Control Officer (Contract)

 

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Corporation of the City of Orillia has an opening for the position of Animal Control Officer (Contract) in the Legislative, Building, Parking and Transit Division of the Development Services and Engineering Department.

 

The City does not use artificial intelligence in the hiring process. All job applications are reviewed personally by the appropriate Department/Division. This is an existing position that is currently vacant.

 

DUTIES

  • Ensure proper and consistent enforcement and compliance with municipal by-laws primarily related to animals.
  • Enforce and obtain compliance by conducting inspections, gathering evidence, explanation, mediation, preparing notice of contravention letters, and if necessary, initiating legal action including laying charges. Conduct foot patrols or operate motor vehicle or bicycle to enforce municipal by-laws.
  • Capture stray dogs or chickens for impounding, transport injured and/or diseased animals.
  • Operate humane traps, and related animal control tools and equipment such as snare poles, nets, cages, etc. and maintain cleanliness of vehicles and equipment.
  • Administrative duties such as selling dog licences, maintain accurate records and file occurrences.
  • Prepare Prosecutor Briefs including information and instructions to ensure adequate and complete information is available for court proceedings. Attend and give evidence in court as required.
  • Maintain effective and co-operative liaison with other departments concerning municipal law matters, and deal with all contacts in a courteous, friendly and efficient manner to promote a high standard of public relations at all times.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Education/GED; AND two (2) years of experience with animals in a shelter or animal control function; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Certification from the Municipal Law Enforcement Officers’ Association an asset.
  • Thorough working knowledge of municipal by-laws, provincial legislation, licensing and enforcement procedures.
  • Possess the ability to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and tactfully, verbally and in writing.
  • Valid Class ‘G’ Ontario driver’s licence with an acceptable driver’s abstract is required for this position.
  • An acceptable Criminal Record Check is required prior to the employment commencement date at the incumbent’s expense.

 

Evening/Weekend shifts are required for this position as well as overnight on-call requirements to provide response to emergency calls. Compensation for this position is $31.33 to $32.27 per hour for 40 hours bi-weekly, plus on-call pay of $205 per each week on-call.
