Lifeguard/Instructor - Orillia Recreation Centre (Summer 2026)

JOB DESCRIPTION

The City of Orillia is seeking a dynamic Head Lifeguard/Instructor to join our team in the Parks and Recreation Division of the Environment and Infrastructure Services Department. The Head Lifeguard/Instructor will plan, organize and implement high-quality programs that are stimulating and enjoyable for all participants. This position provides supervision, guidance and coaching to staff and volunteers. The Head Lifeguard/Instructor is responsible for the safety and well-being of all participants.

 DUTIES

  • Keep current with industry trends and class formats.
  • Maintain complete vigilance while on duty and be ready to respond to any emergency situation.
  • Complete administrative duties in a timely manner. (e.g., attendance, incident/accident reports, opening and closing procedures).
  • Maintain a safe and tidy program space ensuring equipment is set-up, clean and stored appropriately.
  • Report all concerns, accidents and incidents to immediate supervisor for follow-up and take appropriate action.
  • Ensure proper zone coverage and guard station positioning.
  • Provide a high level of front-line customer service: greeting and engaging participants.
  • Assist other instructors in their lessons while not teaching a class.
  • Attendance at all pre- and in-season in-service/training is mandatory.
  • Understand, adhere to, and enforce Corporate Policies & Procedures, Confidentiality Guidelines, Emergency Procedures and Health and Safety Standards for all participants and staff.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be a minimum of 18 years of age.
  • Must have at least 2 years’ experience as a lifeguard working with children.
  • Previous leadership experience with a positive and responsible attitude.
  • Current Lifesaving National Lifeguard Pool.
  • Current LSS Swim instructors, LSS Lifesaving Instructor, and LSS Emergency First Aid Instructor.
  • Must possess Standard First Aid with CPR-C (dated within 3 years).
  • High Five: Principles in Healthy Child Development required.
  • Aquatic Supervisor Training is required.
  • Additional Examiner and Instructor awards are considered an asset.
  • Exceptional customer service, organization, verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to work independently, as well as part of a team.
  • A current and acceptable Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check must be provided prior to the employment commencement date, at the incumbent’s expense.

 
Work hours vary up to 44 hours per week and include daytime, evening and weekend shifts, as well as some holidays. Compensation for this position is $18.40 per hour (2025 rates) to start. Following successful completion of a probationary period, the hourly rate will increase to $19.78 per hour.
